Case study.

Description of need.

Accor S.A. is a French hotel group, part of the CAC 40 index, which operates in 92 countries, the group owns, operates and franchises nearly 3,800 hotels over 5 continents representing several diverse brands, from budget and economy lodgings to luxurious accommodations in exotic locales.

Deeply involved in sustainable development, AccorHotels intends to set the standard and act as the industry leader with its PLANET 21 program. PLANET 21 structures the Group’s sustainable development strategy and organises it into 21 objectives primarily relating to: local sourcing; the effective management of water, energy and waste; health and nutrition; diversity; and responsible procurement.

As part of AccorHotels’ sustainable living plan, they wanted a recycling solution which helped encourage a sustainable world and achieve one of their strategic stakes which is to preserve nature and reduce waste.

Some commitments and objectives:

Raise money in aid of their sustainable living plan.

Diverting waste from landfill and help create a sustainable world.

To meet the WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) Directive.

Secure data erasure procedures mitigating any data leak risks.

"AccorHotels, through its CSR policy and Planet21 program, is always looking to foster initiatives dealing with sustainable development. This year, the Group raises special awareness among the employees about the “Reuse, Reduce or Recycle waste” focus. Giving a second life to unused phones is completely in line with this spirit. Plus, it concerns most of the employees as nowadays everyone has a phone and changes it regularly. Following the same logic, it appeared to us that the collected funds should be allocated to solidarity projects supported by the Group in order to finish this inclusive and sustainable loop."

Christine de Longevialle, Solidarity Accor’s Managing Director.

The service / solution provided.

AccorHotels entered in a recycling partnership with Redeem allowing them to raise money for their endowment fund, through the recovery and recycling of their company mobile phones.

Each year AccorHotels celebrates a PLANET 21 Day, to involve its employees, clients and partners in sustainable development topics. The theme in 2015 was to promote Reuse, Reduce and Recycle waste.

Redeem worked closely with their head office to develop an internal recycling campaign to help collect their employees redundant mobile phones. The amount of money collected was given back to Solidarity Accor supporting projects linked with training and insertion matters.

PLANET 21 took place within their three main offices in Paris (Odyssey, Avia and Evry). The campaign was a great success, which was mainly due to AccorHotels actively engaging their team by displaying posters, setting collection points and raising awareness through regular communications.

As part of the next steps, Redeem and Accor will be working closely together to develop a global recycling solution for all their IT equipment.

The benefits / result.

As a result of working with Redeem, the partnership will help collect thousands of phones, raising funds for their endowment foundation. Redeem helped organise a collection campaign, providing them with all communications and materials to help encourage a reduction in waste.

Other key benefits include:

Helping AccorHotels meet their sustainable living plan. In 2014, nearly 90% of their hotels recycle their waste.

Raising funds for their endowment fund, enhancing their CSR.

Compliance with the WEEE Directive and data regulations with a full audit trail and necessary certification.

Blancco data erasure procedures in place to ensure data was removed, protecting AccorHotels’ reputation.

Redeem also focused on being flexible with AccorHotels’ requirements and needs whilst continuously thinking of new innovative ideas to improve the service provided.

“Redeem has reliable and fast working processes. In just a few weeks, they supported us on various aspects for the collection, providing us with advice, collecting boxes and other communication medium. Moreover, our partnership is based on a long term vision, allowing us to expand the experience to other Head Offices. This allows creating a global and sustainable movement by involving more employees and supporting more solidarity projects around the globe.”

Christine de Longevialle, Solidarity Accor’s Managing Director.
